Kayaking & Paddling
King's Landing stocks the Paddle Vault with four kayaks (two tandem, two solo), four inflatable paddle boards, paddles, life vests in all sizes, a towable tube, and coolers — all free to borrow. Launch right from the public dock across the street to glide the shoreline toward Lily Bay at first light, or cross the bay to look for loons, eagles, and the occasional moose.
The boards and kayaks can also travel (secured in a truck bed or trailer) to the region's quieter paddling spots. Favorites include Lily Bay State Park (calm, sandy, beginner-friendly), Lower Wilson Pond (~10–15 min away, clear water with mountain views), Prong Pond (forest-ringed and quiet, great for kids), Socatean Stream & Marsh near Rockwood (high moose visibility — go early with binoculars), the Moose River (a gentle out-and-back float), and the Mount Kineo shuttle paddle from Rockwood to the base of the cliffs.
Safety first: always wear a life vest, stay near shore and avoid open-water crossings when it's windy, never paddle after dusk, go with a buddy, and keep a dry bag for your phone. Moosehead is large, deep, and exposed — conditions can change fast, and the water stays cold even in summer.
