Fishing the Moosehead Lake Region
What you can catch: Moosehead is known for landlocked salmon, lake trout (togue), and brook trout. You’ll also find cusk (burbot) and some smallmouth bass in select bays.
Where to go:
- On Moosehead Lake (boat/troll):
• Rockwood / Moose River mouth and around Mt. Kineo — classic spring/fall salmon and trout water
• Deep points and shoals in mid-lake — summer jigging for togue
• Lily Bay and Spencer Bay — family-friendly smallmouth bass in summer along rocky shorelines and ledges - Ponds and smaller waters:
• Prong Pond — easy access for canoe/kayak; known for smallmouth bass and perch; a good family option.
• Lower Wilson Pond — deeper, coldwater fishery with salmon, brook trout, and togue; special tackle/bait rules apply.
• First Roach Pond (Kokadjo) — big water for salmon and togue; smelt forage supports spring/fall action.
• Brassua Lake — neighboring lake with salmon and brook trout; popular winter smelt fishery.
• Indian Pond (Kennebec impoundment) — coldwater lake managed for salmon, brook trout, and togue; fish points and drop-offs.
• Big Moose Pond — hike-in feel near Little Moose Public Reserved Land; managed as a trout pond under special regulations.
• Mountain View Pond — small, shallow trout water; good early-season and popular for easy ice-in access.
• Piper Pond (Abbot/Monson) — mixed fishery with stocked trout/salmonids and warm-water species; good for a quick half-day. - Moving water (wade/boat):
• East Outlet (Kennebec River) — fly-fishing for salmon and brookies; parts open year-round (check regs)
• West Outlet — quieter water with trout; good canoe/shore access
• Roach River (near Kokadjo) — strong September runs of salmon and brook trout when flows are released
When it’s best (rule of thumb):
- Ice-out to early summer (May–June): Salmon and brook trout along shorelines, river mouths, Kineo/Moose River area
- Mid-summer (July–Aug): Togue hold deep off points and ledges; smallmouth bass active in Lily and Spencer bays
- Fall (Sept–Oct): Salmon and brook trout move into tributaries like the Roach and Moose Rivers; expect more special regulations
- Winter (ice season): Togue by day and cusk after dark on rocky bottoms; confirm water-specific rules first
Access and logistics: Paved public launches in Greenville and Rockwood; East/West Outlet access points are a short drive from town. Consider a Registered Maine Guide if you’re new to the area.
Licenses and rules: A Maine fishing license is required for ages 16+. Regulations vary by water and season; always check current MDIFW laws before you go.
Ice conditions can vary. Always check thickness and follow local guidance. Avoid unfamiliar areas, especially near inlets or moving water.
